Summary (tldr)
In this post, I’m going to give you the money and time hacks that I apply in my own life, and hopefully, I can help you to come up with your own. People grossly underestimate how profoundly money and time influence your well-being in your life.
…I will also share some dumb ideas I’ve heard about money.
The ultimate flex in life is not having a better house than your neighbour, but is having better time.
45-80-5 Rule
I want to start this blog with this easy-to-remember heuristic. Simplified as follows:
- 45 years is how many years you will work (20-65)
- 80,000 hours This is how many hours you will work (1800/hrs per year)
- 5 million income is roughly what you will earn (mean average)
One thing I have learned traveling to nearly 40 countries is that wherever you go, many people just want your money!
What is Money?
a medium of exchange, a common measure of value (or unit of account), a standard of value (or standard of deferred payment), and a store of value.
Elimination of Inconvenience and Inefficiency
My great-grandpappy used to spend 3 hours climbing dangerous coconut trees to find fresh ripe juicy coconuts, then he would have to go to the local fisherman and trade them for fish which a fisherman had spent 3 hours catching. Great Grandpappy was an excellent climber but a useless fisherman and vice versa with the fisherman.
Money is amazing!
Thank goodness I only have to reach into my wallet to purchase those same things today.
Money is just a convenient way to make a convenient trade.
I think of money as nothing more than stored energy. I trade 40 hours of my life and in return, I get 2 bags of Gold which I can also get to exchange for any other thing, anywhere, and anytime.
Money and Time Hacks
In order to be smart with money you must value your time and your money
Time and life are predictable.
A deconstruction of your work/nonwork/sleep lifetime hours is shown in the first part of this blog. but consider also the following that you get (if you are lucky)…
- You only get 1 journey inside the Solar system traveling through SpaceTime around the Milky Way Galaxy which is part of the Laniakia Supercluster.
- You only live 1000 moons
- You only get 2.5 Billion heartbeats
- You will live until 82 if you are in the OECD
- The only way to get more time is to live longer or to sleep less by improving your lifestyle
Understand Money and Income
- People instinctively think they understand money, but they don’t consider the personal impact on their lifecycle. Instead, they say dumb things like “I don’t do this for the money” or “I’m happy with what I earn”. They also choose jobs that don’t pay them enough and don’t ask themselves how to get more money.
- What if I said to you you can exactly the same money you do right now, but instead of working 1 year you only work 6 months! Then maybe you could rethink what money is.
- In order to cross the F45 line, you need to be financially literate and understand your financial lifecycle
Money and Time Hacks:
Wisdom has been chasing you but you have always been faster!
Succession
- Share the wealth of your (good, kind, loving) parents by helping them and at the same time helping yourself.
- Instead of the parents taking their home equity to the grave and then the children inheriting it, the children should start buying it off the parents at the peak of their earning years and towards the end of their parents lifecycle. They could help the parents cross the F45 line and ensure their financial estate stays in the family – a financial symbiotic tie
Recognise your Cash burn rate
- You should understand how much money you need per annum to keep yourself afloat each week, month, year
- LINK EXCEL WORKBOOK
Inheritance
- Your Gen X, or Boomer parents will be gone soon
Everything you Pay in Time or Money!
Everything in life you either pay for in time or money. By way of example I give you the following:
Example 1: Crunchie Bar Cost
Shop nearby If I want to buy a chocolate bar I can either visit the Shop which is 10 meters from my Workplace front door and it will cost me a whopping $2.97
Shop far away OR I can instead visit the Warehouse which is 300 meters from my Workplace front door and I will purchase for $1.00. It will cost me less that half the price of the dairy however I will spend 10 minutes walking there, plus 10 minutes looking and purchasing, plus 10 minutes walking back, (a wasted 30 minutes that I could have used surfing the Internet).
Example 2: Private Medical Insurance
Paying $1500 I can pay $1,500 per year in medical insurance and If I do it will cost me $15,000 dollars over 10 years. One big benefit is that if I ever need medical care then I will get to visit a Private Medical care specialist straight away should I ever need too.
Not paying $1500 If I do not pay medical insurance then when I need to see a specialist then I will most likely need to go on some kind of Public Healthcare waiting list and pay through time
One big benefit of NOT having private Medical Insurance is that if I don’t need medical care I’ve got $1500 in my pocket at the end of each year!
Note: Another interesting point is that if I do need public medical care and use the public healthcare system that I have payed into each year through Tax then I have a way of getting a return on all the tax I have paid over the years
My House
When I first buy my house
Example 3: Weed Killer
If I buy a commodity item like weed killer then lets say it costs me $50. The benefit is that I will save my self time because instead of going around my house bending my FA over and pulling out all my weeds I’ll just use a spray them a lot quicker without even bending my FA – I’ve gained time back however I’ve lost $50
Now you might say I haven’t calculated the time cost of getting my FA in the car then driving to the No1 Weed Killer company looking around and making purchase and then driving back home again – not to mention fuel costs (plus the hidden cost of buying another crunchie bar for on the way home)!
Maybe if I calculate the total costs maybe I would have just been better of bending my FA over and pulling out the weeds myself! Then I get to also keep the $50 which I spent 2 hour(s) of my life working for
Cost to Usage Burndown
- Things you buy should have a cost that is calculated against its usage (pro rata)
- You should calculate this cost before you you buy and then determine what is an acceptable burndown value
- You need to define your own values to fit your current reality. These are some examples that I use in my life
- The Cost to Usage Burndown ideas comes from the idea that you get a return on your money WHEN you reach its perceived BURNDOWN value which satisfies me.
- For example I perceive that to drive a nice car should cost me 4k per year; so if I purchase a car for 20k that means that in 5 years my burndown value should be $0 and from then on that same car is making me money
Weed Whacker $300
Each time I use it I get a pro-rata return until I reach my CUB
- 1x $300 per use
- 2x $150 per use
- 3x $100 per use
- 30x which will equal $10 per use
Trendsetting $100 Polyester Suite
Each time I wear it I get a pro-rata return
- 1x $100 per wear
- 2x $50 per wear
- 3x $33.33 per
- 10x which will equal $10 per wear
Note: Clothing has a finite number of wears before you throw it out. Usually related to how savage your drier is!
Watch $1000
Each time I wear it I get a pro-rata return
- 1x $1000 per wear
- 2x $500 per wear
- 3x $333.33 per
- 10x which will equal $100 per wear
It’s generally not a good idea to buy an expensive watch because you don’t get reach your burndown value until you have worn it 100x times ($10 per wear)!
Weed Killer $50
The first time I use it to spray rid of my weeds it’s cost me:
- $300 per use.
- The second time $150 per use
- the third time $100 per
- use all the way down to the 30th time which will equal $10 per use
Car
Every dumbass under the age of 25 has brought a car they can’t afford.
Your Intrinsic Value of goods to cost
Everything you buy should have a cost that is calculated against it’s usage
Show me the Money Dad
When kids come a hustling for your hard earned money. I tell them I had to work an hour to get the money they want, so in exchange they should work 1 hour (or any equivalent time you deem fair because an hour to a kid is not the same as adult) to also earn that money from me.
Although I don’t think I’ve ever got my full hours work back it is amusing to watch them slaving around the house and also fun to get triggered when they do a half assed job! …wait whaattt!?
Beauty
If you see a pretty girl in the street and she is with a not-so-good-looking man then you might say that she has traded her youth and her beauty for financial advantage. He has exchanged his lifelong accumulation of resources and experience in exchange.
And who are we to judge either of them? It is a mutually beneficial exchange.
